The Human Vaccines Project

The Human Vaccines Project is an extension of the Human Genome Project that happened in 1990s. The Human Vaccines Project aims to map & decode the human immune system, making that data available to scientists and researchers around the world to accelerate vaccine development and cures for flu, cancer, HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, others.

Creative Brief:

Design a campaign for HVPI’s Michelson Prize that tells an engaging story of the innovative body of research these young investigators do (mixing AI and cutting edge technology to advance human vaccine development), gives their branding around science a unique visual lift, and gets their community engaged and excited to apply.

Process + Project Development —

Phase I:

Updated & Extending The Brand Style: The core work of the Human Vaccines Project is to advanced vaccine development through innovative partnerships and research. There is a core brand tension of the human aspect and the technology aspect.

I wanted to let both aspects live side by side in the branding. I did both visual research and some scientific research and developed this visual system:

I incorporated elements of technology and science into the symbols. I also used some striking, hopeful black and white photos of humans to show the diversity that is encompassed in their projects and research.

Phase II:

Application of Updated Style To Print & Campaign Work: I then applied this system to campaign assets they needed for the launch of the Prize including a national print ad in SCIENCE magazine, online banner ads, email newsletters, postcards and printed flyers:
